What to bring: second-opinion checklist

The more complete your records, the more useful your second opinion. Use this list; you can print this page.

Records

  • Doctor's notes and discharge summaries
  • All blood test reports, especially the most recent
  • Scan reports and the images (CD, DVD, USB or online link) for ultrasound, CT, MRI/MRCP and PET
  • Endoscopy, EUS, ERCP and colonoscopy reports, with photos if available
  • Biopsy and cytology reports; if possible, the slides and blocks for review
  • Operation notes, if you've had surgery

About you

  • A list of all your medicines, including blood thinners and supplements
  • Allergies
  • A short timeline of symptoms (when it started, what's been done)
  • Family history of pancreas, bowel, stomach or liver disease

Your questions

Write down what matters most to you. Common ones:

  • What exactly is the diagnosis, and how sure are we?
  • What are all my options, including waiting?
  • What are the benefits and risks of each?
  • What happens if I do nothing for now?

Bring someone along

A family member or friend can help remember the discussion and ask questions.
