Chest burning: acidity or heart?

"It's just gas" is one of the most common, and occasionally most dangerous, assumptions people make. Acidity and heart pain can feel surprisingly similar.

Treat it as the heart first if…

Get an ECG first, antacid later, especially if you're diabetic or over 40, when chest discomfort comes with:
  • Sweating, breathlessness, nausea or faintness
  • Pain spreading to the arm, jaw, neck or back
  • Pain brought on by exertion
  • A feeling of pressure or tightness
Go to the nearest emergency department or call 108.

More likely reflux when…

  • Burning behind the breastbone after meals or when lying down
  • Sour taste or regurgitation
  • Relief with an antacid
  • Long-standing, similar episodes already checked by a doctor

Even then, new or changing chest symptoms deserve a check-up.

What helps reflux

  • Dinner 3 hours before bed; smaller meals
  • Raise the head end of the bed with blocks (extra pillows don't work as well)
  • Sleeping on the left side
  • Losing weight if needed, stopping smoking
